A contemporary landscape painting of overlapping ink layers by Em Campbell, “Indigo Song,” was made for Em’s little brother who pushed her to stretch her boundaries and try new colors in her work. The happy result was this deep, moody blue landscape filled with layers of forest and a wandering pack of wolves.

Deep in the heart of the frozen Northwest Territories, the packs battle for dominance, for hunting ground, for survival. Standing with his mate, the leader of the eastern passage calls the pack back together after an unsuccessful hunt. Tonight their larger, cautious prey escaped them, and the yearlings will go hungry. But the snow is melting and spring can be smelled on the chill air. Summer will be a fattening time. A time for reclaiming lost territory and for growing the family. But before the warm days, will come dangerous nights. Nights when the fast-growing males will try for the lead position in the pack. Those skirmishes never end well. Either the pack will lose a member to exile, or the melting snow will be turned red. This is the way of it. Tonight though, tonight they are united. Tomorrow may be filled with struggle and uncertainty, but tonight the pack regathers, tonight they sing.

This is a giclée print (fancy inkjet print) of the original ink painting.
