Yet, despite his doubts, the young officer rose through the ranks, relying on his wit, courage, and relentless perseverance. Horatio’s Hope did not rest in commanding through domination, but in leading with integrity, earning him the respect of his crew, a ship of his own, and a place in fictional maritime legend. This painting of a tall, dark, vessel imagines one of his earliest ships—simple, noble, and proud, just like its captain.
