Commissions and Custom Work Policies and Details from Em Campbell Art

Working with you to create something unique is a privilege I don't take lightly. Thank you for considering working with me. I accept a limited number of commissions each year, reserved for pieces that align with my style and studio capacity. This work is well suited for those looking for an amazing gift, designers sourcing for projects, art consultants, and collectors sourcing an original piece for a specific space.

I have years of experience creating commissioned artworks, so you can expect clear communication, upfront pricing, and a final piece you'll be happy with. Please note, I do not paint portraits at this time.

Pricing

Rate: $5 per square inch. Calculate by multiplying length by width, then by 5. Pieces 18x24" and larger are painted exclusively on canvas and include a $70 materials fee.

Creating a piece that completes your space or becomes part of your story is work I give careful attention to from the first conversation to the final brushstroke. I look forward to working with you.

How the Process Works

First, we talk through expectations, vision, and exact parameters for the piece. I'll be upfront about my strengths and limitations and whether I believe I can create what you're envisioning. There's no obligation to move forward. If you decide to proceed, I'll send a contract to sign before work begins. (sample contract here)

Once the contract is signed, expect an email within a week with a sketch of your idea. This is the stage to be honest about what you want. Changes are easiest to make now. Once you approve the sketch, I begin painting.

Painting time depends on size and scale. If yours is the only commission I'm working on, it may be done 2-3 weeks after sketch approval. Typical turnaround is about 6 weeks, and we'll discuss your specific timeframe upfront. December is my busiest season and I don't accept commissions that month, so for anything needed by Christmas, reach out by September.

Cancellation and Deposits

A non-refundable deposit of 25% is required to secure your commission and begins work on your sketch. The remaining balance is due upon completion, before the painting ships or is delivered. If you cancel before the sketch stage, your deposit is forfeited to cover time already invested. If you cancel after painting has begun, no refunds are issued, as materials and time cannot be recovered.

Non-Response Policy

If I don't hear back from you for more than 30 days at any stage, sketch approval, feedback, or final payment, your commission will be considered paused. After 60 days of no contact, the project will be closed and your deposit forfeited. You're welcome to restart a new commission at current rates and turnaround times.

Revisions After Painting Begins

Once you approve the sketch and painting begins, the design is considered final. Small adjustments to color or detail may be possible early in the painting process, but structural changes to composition are not, as watercolor doesn't allow for significant rework once paint is applied. If you're unsure about any element, raise it during the sketch phase, that's the time to get it right.

FAQ

What materials do you use?

I work primarily in watercolor on archival, acid-free paper and canvas, using lightfast professional-grade pigments intended to last generations without fading.

How is my piece shipped?

Finished paintings are shipped flat or rolled in protective packaging, fully insured. You'll receive tracking information once your piece is on its way.

What sizes do you offer?

Custom sizing is available within the ranges discussed during our initial conversation. Standard options run from small (11x14" and under) to large (24x36" and up), with pricing scaled accordingly.

Can I choose the colors or style?

Yes. Sketch approval is the stage to align on color palette, style, and composition before painting begins.

Do you ship internationally?

Contact me directly to discuss international shipping, as costs and timelines vary by destination.
